Itinerary |
Day 1 - Kota Kinabalu.
A single Pick-up from the airport, otherwise participants make their way to the meeting point
in central Kota Kinabalu themselves (a 15 minute taxi ride). Document collection: Passport photocopies (x2), Travel Insurance Certificate copies (x2),
health and diet questionnaire, emergency contacts.
Accommodation is included in a clean and spacious hostel with access to good quality western
shower and toilet facilities. |

Day 2 – Kota Kinabalu.
Preparation and in – country build – up |

Morning:
Introduction, aims and objectives of the expedition and how it will be run.
Health interviews, Kit checking and new kit distribution
Medical, health and hygiene briefing,
Safety briefing, incl. use of smoke alarms
Risk assessments and how to do them ‘dynamically’
Emergency procedures – incl. Satellite phone use
Afternoon:
Expedition preparation
Food preparation. Buying food for main trekking phase.
Camp craft and jungle skills briefing (which we will re-visit and practice later on in the
expedition).
Accommodation is included in the same clean and spacious hostel with access to good quality
western-style shower and toilet facilities. |

Day 3 – Kota Kinabalu to Sepilok
Approximately a 6-hour road journey on good quality sealed road, cutting right across the
state of Sabah, a great introduction to Borneo.
Accommodation for the whole stay at Sepilok is in a clean, good quality hostel with westernstyle
toilets and showers. |
Day 4 – Sepilok
A wonderful opportunity to visit the Orang-utan Sanctuary, where orang-utans that have suffered ultimately from habitat loss or poachers are looked after in a semi-wild sanctuary
before they are re-introduced into the wild.
Sepilok is also home to the Rainforest
Centre, a scientific establishment set in a
beautiful rainforest location close to thec
sanctuary, which open their doors to
tourists and have some very informative
nature walks and a wonderful canopy walk. |
It’s also possible to do a 6-7 hour return
walk to the mangrove forest which spreads
in land from the coastline.

Day 5 – Day 10 – The Sun Bear Sanctuary Project
The Sabah Wildlife Department together with the Sabah Forestry Department and the nongovernmental
organisation Land Empowerment Animals People (LEAP) are jointly setting up
the conservation centre next to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.
The sun bear facility will be the first of its kind in Asia and is aimed at rehabilitation,
research and education efforts concerning the animal. Groups are needed to help with the building of this large complex and enclosure.
Work will be within and alongside primary rainforest during the day and we retire to our
lodge accommodation in the late afternoon where we will stay for the next few days.

Day 11 – Sepilok to Sandakan
We travel in the morning to the compact coastal city of Sandakan for a well earned rest, and
a chance to enjoy the sea air and wonderful views after stocking up on food for the trekking
phase.

Day 12 – Sandakan
There are numerous things to see and do around Sandakan, such as an optional visit to the
proboscis monkey sanctuary at Labuk Bay, or if there’s time a visit to some stunning islands
where you can see turtles and go snorkelling in coral reef.

Day 13 – Sandakan to Jungle Reserve
Today we travel to our starting point for our jungle trek.

Day 14 – Jungle Reserve trekking, Day 1
The first day of our jungle trek, which we will break into gently with a morning trek and an
afternoon session of camp craft skills. There’ll be plenty of opportunity for wildlife spotting
and our first evening will be around a campfire and then in our hammocks under the canopy. |

Day 15 – Jungle Reserve, Day 2
Passing over beautiful jungle streams
through lush rainforest with wildlife all
around, this is the real tropical rainforest
experience!
Again we’ll be cooking around a fire and
comfortable in our hammocks by night.

Day 16 - Jungle Reserve, Day 3
Our last full day in the jungle.

Day 17 – Jungle Reserve to Kota Kinabalu
In the morning we trek out of the jungle and then make our way leisurely to Kota Kinabalu. |

Day 18 – Kota Kinabalu
Today we part company; some may wish to continue their travels or to go back to their
country. |
