Sepilok is also home to the Rainforest Centre, a scientific establishment set in a beautiful rainforest location close to thec sanctuary, which open their doors to tourists and have some very informative nature walks and a wonderful canopy walk.

The Sabah Wildlife Department together with the Sabah Forestry Department and the nongovernmental

The sun bear facility will be the first of its kind in Asia and is aimed at rehabilitation, research and education efforts concerning the animal. Groups are needed to help with the building of this large complex and enclosure.

Work will be within and alongside primary rainforest during the day and we retire to our lodge accommodation in the late afternoon where we will stay for the next few days.

We travel in the morning to the compact coastal city of Sandakan for a well earned rest, and a chance to enjoy the sea air and wonderful views after stocking up on food for the trekking phase.

Day 12 – Sandakan

There are numerous things to see and do around Sandakan, such as an optional visit to the proboscis monkey sanctuary at Labuk Bay, or if there’s time a visit to some stunning islands where you can see turtles and go snorkelling in coral reef.
