Subject: Thank you
Silke
I've been meaning to write ever since I left Bambelela, better late than never!
Really wanted to extend thanks for the amazing experiences you made for me, not only the sanctuary work and all that involved but also for the trips and going up to CARE, and the lovely book you presented me with afterwards. The time I had with you will always be remembered plus I now have some great friends and a much better understanding of wildlife in South Africa.
I wish I could have made it back for a visit but my time in SA is almost at a close, just 2 weeks left so it's unlikely to happen. Appreciate the recent offer though. Please pass on my regards to the team and best of luck with your continuing and valuable work with the precious wildlife of this fantastic country.
Don't forget to look after yourself too! Thanks again for a special and unforgettable time in my life. Much love, Merry Christmas and a successful 2011 to you.
Liz

Volunteering with Vervet Monkeys
Bambelela is a privately owned and operated wildlife rehabilitation and conservation centre in the Waterberg district of South Africa. It is well known and especially well regarded for its exceptional work with Vervet monkeys. The special privilege of volunteers is to share the environment with the free living Vervet Monkeys which have been rehabilitated here.
The Vervet Monkey Rehabilitation and Release programme will involve you helping with handycapped monkeys, hand raising orphaned monkey babies, caring for injured monkeys and other small mammals. You will also have the opportunity to watch other wild animals such as various antelopes, zebras, warthogs, porcupines and many different bird species which are attracted to the Groot Nylsoog River and its marsh passing through Bambelela.
This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone with an interest in the wildlife of South Africa, and particularly for those with an interest in primates as Bambelela also offers Field Guide Assosiation of Southern Africa [FGASA] based courses for theory and practical studies.
The volunteers help is required as follows according to the Daily Duty Plan:
- feeding of animals in the wildlife care
- caring for the young and sick animals
- cleaning of cages, camps, clinic, kitchen, bomas and enclosures
- 24h emergency stand-by [once a week]
- assisting the owner and manager in ad-hock duties
- creating natural environment in enclosures, building of camps, keeping data lists,
- cleaning and maintaining own rooms
We rely on volunteers for their financial contribution and for their assistance in caring for injured and orphaned animals at the centre - Our main cause is the rehabilitation of Vervet Monkeys.
