A once in a lifetime experience in Borneo that blends an enthralling tropical ecology field course and exhilarating jungle trekking in the central highlands of Borneo with fascinating coral reef exploration.
This expedition is a unique opportunity that will not only give you a lifetime of memories of Borneo’s jungle and its stunning coral reef, but will also allow you to explore the world and knowledge of researching ecologists at the fore-front of conservation initiatives in Borneo, currently of worldwide importance.
Here are some of the comments of previous participants about the expedition and the tropical ecology field course at the Cardiff University research facility:
"...I can't think of anyone who wouldn't benefit from this or enjoy it!"
"I now have a far greater understanding of Borneo as a country, of its people …and of its animal and plant life. I (also) gained many new skills related to jungle survival and made many new friends.”
Our itineraries do vary slightly from month to month, but all expeditions include the phases below:
|
Phase 1 – The Tropical Ecology Field Trip
A 3-day tropical ecology field trip at the Cardiff University research facility, the Danau Girang Field Centre in Sabah, Borneo. Situated within the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, this area has an amazing variety of animals and plants, including ten species of primate (e.g. orang-utan, proboscis monkey, Bornean gibbon), Bornean elephant, clouded leopard, other cat and civet species, sun bear, binturong, salt water crocodile, monitor lizard, reticulated python, king cobra and over 300 species of bird.
And if you’re interested in birds…all eight species of hornbill found in Borneo can be found here.
The amiable head scientist and director of Danau Girang Field Centre, Dr Benoit Goossens, orchestrates the exciting teaching and learning activities including; interpretive boat trips, interpretive walks, lectures and seminars (when visiting scientists are available).
The course will take you through an ecological and biogeographical comparison of the tropical ‘wet’ forest regions of the world to give you a more holistic understanding of the earth’s rainforests. With interpretive boat rides, walks and animal observations to complement the teaching inside, the course gradually focuses on the ecology, conservation measures and issues of the rainforests of Borneo. By the third day the teaching is more specifically on the knowledge base and conservation issues surrounding the Kinabatangan floodplain, a widely recognised biodiversity hotspot.
“…certainly recommended for people who have a passion for wildlife and conservation and want to experience something different” – Anita Gatherole, Huntingdon, UK.
“Any Biology based university student or A-level student would find this (course) incredibly beneficial… " – Josh Pendergast, Kent, UK.
"I had an amazing experience at the Centre - seeing wildlife I had previously only seen on TV, zoo's etc....Benoit's passion for his work is very obvious and inspiring. To be able to walk through and sleep in the tropical jungle is a wonderful thing to do" – Helle Enderby, Denmark.
Danau Girang Field Centre is a collaborative research and training facility managed by Cardiff University and Sabah Wildlife Department and was re-opened with Cardiff University funding around May 2008. Benoit’s research interests are within the fields of population genetics, ecology and conservation, and has taken him throughout central and eastern Africa and Asia. Benoit is employed by Cardiff University yet works very closely with Sabah Wildlife and local NGO’s. A full breakdown of Benoit’s research and publications can be found here. Visit the Danau Girang Field Centre website here.

Phase 2. Trekking in the Cooler Climate of the Central Highlands of Borneo
This is a 4-day remote jungle trek through one of the most important conservation areas in the world, and with your new and enhanced knowledge and understanding of the rainforest you will be all the more able to truly appreciate this incredible experience.
Our treks begin from the small yet almost totally self-sufficient highland community of Ba Kelalan, on the edge of one of the largest remaining blocks of contiguous primary rainforest in Southeast Asia – adjacent to both the Pulong Tau National Park in Sarawak and the huge Kayan-Mentarang National Park of Kalimantan, Indonesia. This is one of the last remaining great areas of wilderness in the world which historically has been difficult to enter until recently. English speaking guides in this area is also a problem which is another reason why few foreigners venture deep inside – our British and Australian Expedition Leaders can speak Malay and Indonesian.
This trek is extremely rewarding, sleeping in hammocks under mosquito nets and raincover, yet challenging. You will be passing through completely untouched rainforest where a suspected new species of carnivore was caught on camera in 2003, looking a cross between a cat and a fox. Generally participants carry their own backpack, but you may be able to hire a local porter to take your backpack.
Alternatively we may be trekking in the Crocker Range National Park, Sabah’s largest National Park; a mixture of lowland dipterocarp and lower montane rainforest which includes many species endemic to Borneo including endangered species such as the orang-utan, the sun bear and the clouded leopard. The Crocker Range and the Kinabalu masif stretches almost the full length of the western half of Sabah and is the central part of the water catchment area of western Sabah.
Phase 3. Diving or Snorkeling in Warm Coral Reef Seas
Relax a little... dive or snorkel in some of the most pristine coral reef in Southeast Asia. Coral reefs just off the coast of Indonesia and the Philippines, including the island of Borneo, possess the world’s most diverse coral and marine species. Almost everyone who visits the area of East Sabah come solely to dive or snorkel as the islands off the south east coast are regarded as some of the best diving spots in the world, particularly that of Sipadan island, which is in the list of the world’s top ten dive and snorkeling sites.
The dive sites that surround Sipadan island are filled with spectacular natural formations, such as a 600m reef wall and a labyrinth of underwater limestone caves that contain many skeletal remains of turtles that have become lost and drown before finding the surface. Often divers are witness to sites such as; schools of green and hawksbill turtles nesting and mating, schools of barracuda and big-eye trevally in tornado-like formations, pelagic species such as manta rays, eagle rays, scalloped hammerhead sharks and whale sharks. If you've never been diving or snorkeling in the tropics the likelihood is you'll always remember this day as the first day you opened your eyes to a whole new weird and wonderful world!

Accommodation
Depending on the exact itinerary, which can be changed to suit private group bookings, the accommodation ranges from homely locally-built lodges and homestays through to comfortable private hostels or private hostel rooms. You will only share with other members of the group. In Malaysia, hostels generally are becoming increasingly upmarket, such that they are becoming the favoured accommodation of the more mature traveler. The great advantages of hostels are the relaxed, clean and tidy communal areas and the welcoming nature that they so often provide.
During the build-up to our 4-day jungle trek and then upon return to Ba Kelalan, we will be in a local homestay in a small jungle community, comfortable and equipped for groups and people of all ages, you will have the chance to truly sample real Bornean cuisine and hospitality. During the trek the nights will be spent in our hammocks (which are provided), inside our mosquito nets and under our basher, or rain cover. The real jungle experience!
|
Food
While staying in the homestay you will be provided with delicious local cuisine cooked using locally grown vegetables and reared livestock. At Danau Girang the food is brought in mainly from the local villages and cooked by locals, and whilst in hostels and travelling we will eat from good quality local restaurants and cafes. Working with a budget you and the team will choose and purchase your own supplies to take with you on the trekking phase of your adventure and your Expedition Leader will be on hand to help you choose from amongst the huge variety of Malaysian specialties sold at the local market.
